Aviate Won the Musidora at York

Sent off at 11-4 following success at Ascot last month, the Dansili filly travelled strongly throughout in the hands of Eddie Ahern but was boxed in behind the leaders heading inside the final two furlongs. Outsider Gold Bubbles looked the likely winner when striking the front inside the final furlong but once the gap came, Aviate showed an electric turn of foot to get up right on the line to score by a head. Ahern said:

“When they quickened I was in a little bit of trouble, but most of the trouble was I wasn’t getting the gaps and I had to sit and suffer for a long time. She got me out of a lot of trouble because I’d have got a lot of stick if she’d got beat. I switched her back onto the inside and she quickened really well. After that you’d think she’ll stay further.”

Paco Boy Wins Bet365 Mile at Sandown 2010

Sent off the 11-10 favourite, (advised at 6/4 this morning) Richard Hannon’s charge was having his first start since finishing second in the Sussex Stakes 269 days ago. Richard Hughes let Paco Boy see plenty of daylight as Cat Junior went out in front and Pressing was the first to lay his cards on the table, going on with Border Patrol two furlongs out.

Paco Boy was travelling sweetly for Hughes and when he gave him the signal a furlong out, the response was immediate and the five-year-old quickly pulled three and a quarter lengths clear. Pressing kept on for second while The Cheka, who was also returning from a long lay-off, finished a creditable third. Richard Hannon jnr, son and assistant to the winning trainer, said:

“I just spoke to Dad on the phone and he agreed with me that the horse is definitely better this year. He will go to the Lockinge now and I wish that race had been today as he was so well. He’s been gasping for a race for the last six to eight weeks and he kicked two windows out of his box as he’s so fresh. I think he will struggle to find one to beat him after today. I know he was beaten in the Lockinge last year but there were complications before the race. He didn’t look well on the morning but we took a risk and ran him. After the Lockinge there are races like the Queen Anne and the Jacques le Marios and connections are looking at all sorts of races in all sorts of places.”

Quevega wins at Punchestown

Sent off the 5-2 favourite, you could have got 4/1 this morning, on the back of her second triumph in the David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, Willie Mullins’ six-year-old travelled ominously well throughout in the hands of Paul Townend. Stablemate Mourad also moved up menacingly on the turn for home, but Townend remained motionless until the final flight, after which his mount quickened clear to score by three lengths.

Alan King’s Bensalem finished strongly to fill the runner-up spot, with Mourad third.
